Dr. Odogwu began his medical training at the University College Hospital, University of Ibadan in Nigeria, earning his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in November 2001. Following his passion for psychiatry, he pursued further specialization, obtaining a Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in October 2007. His dedication to excellence in psychiatric practice was further demonstrated by his attainment of Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in August 2011. Additionally, he has successfully completed the prestigious fellowship examinations in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, highlighting his advanced knowledge and skills in the field.
Dr. Odogwu's postgraduate psychiatric training was completed through the Mater University College Dublin (UCD) Psychiatry Program, where he underwent rigorous training across various specialties within psychiatry. His training encompassed essential areas, including general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, old age psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, psychiatry of learning disabilities, and forensic psychiatry. Currently, Dr. Odogwu is pursuing a Master of Science and Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, focusing on Health Service Management. He is fully registered with both the General Medical Council (GMC) United Kingdom and the Irish Medical Council, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of medical practice. His GMC registration, obtained in September 2006 and his Irish Medical Council registration since January 2007 .Additionally, he holds full registration with the New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Alberta Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, which underscore his qualifications and commitment to patient safety. In July 2013, Dr. Odogwu has served as a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist at St Brigid’s Hospital in Ardee. In this role, he led a community - oriented mental health service that caters to a population of approximately 70,000 individuals in County Louth, Republic of Ireland.
Before his current role, Dr. Odogwu accumulated extensive experience at the Prince Albert Mental Health Services Saskatchewan since November 2013. His responsibilities include managing multidisciplinary teams and overseeing specialized psychiatric procedures, such as ketamine treatment and the administration of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), which are vital for patients with treatment-resistant conditions. He also directs the Nipawin Outpatient Clinic, providing essential mental health services to the community and ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care tailored to their unique needs. His diverse experience includes managing cases in prison psychiatry at both the Saskatchewan Men's and Women's Provincial Jail, where he addresses the complex mental health needs of incarcerated individuals. This experience has equipped him with unique insights into the psychological challenges faced by this population, allowing him to provide tailored care that promotes rehabilitation and recovery. As an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at The University of Saskatchewan, he plays a pivotal role in the education and training of medical students and residents, serving as the Clinical Lead in Psychiatry and guiding students during their placements at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert Saskatchewan.
Dr. Odogwu has held various management positions within the Prince Albert Mental Health Services, contributing significantly to the development and implementation of mental health policies and practices that enhance patient care.
